Drawing # 40

Drawing #40, acrylic on gessoed paper. Oct, 2011
Again, without the black ink, the facial expression changes dramatically. But just as intense as the previous portraits.

Drawing # 39

Drawing # 39, acrylic on gessoed paper. Oct, 2011
This time, I left the india ink out and just used acrylic with a paint knife and some washes. This face just appeared on the paper. Didn't use any reference from any source.

Painting # 5-self portrait

Self-portrait, acrylic, black ink on gessoboard. Oct, 2011
Another self-portrait done this year. Self-portraits change quite dramatically one from another. I guess it depends on your mood or what you're thinking about the time.

A lovely smile

Drawing # 33, acrylic, black india ink on gessoed paper. Oct, 2011
I know, I know, she looks a little psychotic. But she does have the loveliest of smiles.

Wish list

Drawing # 32 , acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper. Oct, 2011
I have no comments tonight about anything. On my wish list is a brand new mattress so I can sleep better.

Drawing # 31

Drawing # 31, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper. Oct, 2011
I've lost track of what number drawing this is. I'm thinking of starting from the beginning of this year and going from drawing # 1 to now in chronological order. I should also get into the habit of signing my art as well.

Quiet please

Drawing # 30 , acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper.  Oct, 2011

What can I say, a very quiet drawing. Not sad, just quiet.

Smile and show me your teeth

Drawing # 29, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper. Sept 25th,2011

This is Lorenzo's favourite drawing. It's all about the teeth. It just works.

The freaky guy

Drawing # 28, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper. Sept. 25th, 2011
I have no idea where this guy came from. He just appeared on paper. I really like him even though both my kids think he's just plain weird. Greta calls him the freaky guy. Lorenzo thinks he's having a really bad hair day. I don't care. I think he's got "personality."

Drawing #27

Drawing # 27, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper, Sept 25th,2011
Continuation from Sunday night; second drawing from the evening. Based on a photo of Lorenzo. name it. Definitely not a realistic portrait, but a portrait nonetheless.

Drawing # 26

Drawing # 26, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper, Sept 25th, 2011
Just when I thought I ran out of time last night, I pushed myself and got mad and got to work on some new art.  Lost some sleep along the way, but it was worth it.
Just couldn't start a new week at work on the wrong foot thinking about why I didn't get around to painting yet again.
Now, I have to figure out some creative titles. Can't seem to come up with anything elusive, fancy or cool.
Untitled always seems to do the trick.

Drawing # 25, Fal series

Drawing # 25, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper,  Fall 2011
After 3 attempts, drawing # 4 is much more to my liking. Augusto likes it a lot, but both Greta and Lorenzo find it somewhat "strange."

Drawing # 24, Fall series

Drawing # 24, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper, Fall 2011
Not my best work. But I did another drawing right after this one that turned out much better. But that's what art is like when you're doing it. You have to practice, practice, practice.
Drawing # 3 wasn't so strong, but drawing # 4 was better. I'll post it tomorrow.

Drawing # 22 & # 23, Fall series

Drawing # 22, acrylic black ink on gessoed paper,  Fall 2011

It is always so daunting to begin again over and over. That is the story of my art. I begin a new series and work to build up a comprehensive body of work, but just when I get to a breaking point and begin to arrive at that next level, life draws me back to my other realities in my life. Not that they are bad realities; it just makes me create art that starts and stops and starts and stops over and over.
That said, the above work is based on my observations of my birthday bouquet of flowers. I had to find a starting point and flowers are not my first pick as a subject to draw, but it's a start. It helps to get the creative juices flowing again.

Drawing # 23, acrylic, black ink on gessoed paper, Fall 2011
This is a second work that I began right after I completed the first drawing. I changed my vantage point and came up with a different version of the same bouquet. I was debating whether to continue with more drawings of the flower bouquet, but I opted to do some faces instead.
I'll post the other new works that I made in my next posts ( I had a very productive day today).

Chocolate bunny

I made a special chocolate bunny rabbit as per my daughter's request. Everyone is quite amazed at how it turned out. I quite like it a lot.

Drawing # 21

So here's my latest creation. Went in a totally different direction with this one. Black india ink and some acrylic paint on gessoed paper. Simple, serene and powerful.

Painting # 4, 2011

I figured it was time to do some painting. So I got out one of my 5 x 7 ampersand gessoboard...very professional...had to order them from the States because selection of art supplies is very limited here in Montreal. Don't believe me? Ask any professional artist and they would probably agree with me.
So anyway, back to the painting. It is based on a photo of Lorenzo that I took of him a couple of years ago. Definitely didn't turn out the way I wanted. Near the end, I started using black india ink because I just couldn't seem to get what I wanted out of the painting.
Tune in tomorrow, because the drawing that I made right after this painting is pretty cool.

Drawing # 20

This drawing didn't turn out as  I expected. It was done the same evening as drawing # 19. Not my favourite of the bunch.

Drawing # 19

So, I managed to get in some art this past weekend, even though it was already after 10 pm last night when I started the drawing. It was worth losing some sleep time to stay up and make this drawing.

Drawing # 18

I don't have any other drawings after this one. It's a little sad in a way.

Drawing # 17

This drawing was done very quickly last week late at night. Turned out great, if I say so myself.

Drawing # 16

What can I say...I like how this drawing turned out. I like how she looks you straight in the eye.

Drawing # 15

Back to the black India ink mixed with acrylic on gessoed paper. This began as a portrait of Lorenzo, but alas, my artwork has a mind of its own.

Drawing # 14

This particular drawing began as a portrait of Augusto, but inevitably, it never quite turns out as planned.

I am enjoying the black India ink very much. It is quite dramatic and to the point.

Drawing # 12

Should I still be calling these drawings the week-end series?
Not really sure. I'm very bad with remembering people's names and putting titles on my artwork. Numbers work best for me.

Drawing # 12 is best described by my daughter, Greta, as the following: " Really scary face that looks like it's coming out of the paper."

Yes, I will admit this drawing is a bit intense, but I like it. The eyes look alive. No idea where she came from. Being alone late at night in your studio can make you do some strange stuff.

Drawing # 10 & 11 week-end series

These were not done officially during that infamous week-end, but they are a continuation of the series.
I've already posted these, but I figured I should show them again to continue the continuity of the drawings ( such bad english, I know).
So, here goes:
Both drawings are mixed media. I used black india ink and acrylic on gessoed paper.

Drawing  # 10 ... My daughter, Greta finds him a little creepy.

Drawing # 11... My son, Lorenzo likes this one a lot.

Drawing # 9 week-end series

This beautiful portrait was done late at night while listening to some good music. I used acrylic and black india ink on gessoed paper.

Drawing # 8 week-end series

This drawing is all impasto. Used only a palette knife to apply the gouache on the gessoed paper. At the very end, I used just a small brush to apply some diluted gouache to draw her arm.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Drawing # 7 week-end series

Drawing number 7 came right after 6 on Sunday afternoon. I used lots of black india ink over acrylic paint. Took a while to make because she wasn't turning out the way I expected her to. The black ink worked wonders. Love the blue sleeves and all the black stripes on her dress.

Drawing # 6 week-end series

This is drawing # 6. The first five drawings were completed on Saturday. This particular one was started on Sunday. It went in a completely different direction after the first five were very textured and thick. I used acrylic paints over graphite pencil. The acrylics were diluted giving a watercolour effect to the work. Still done on gessoed paper. I love her top.

Drawing # 5 week-end series

This is drawing # 5. It is based on a photo of Lorenzo, but doesn't look like him anymore. Again, I used a palette knife with acrylic paints on gessoed paper. It has a thick impasto effect. But you can only see the texture really well in person.

Drawing # 4 week-end series

This is the fourth drawing from the week-end series. I used a palette knife with acrylic paint to create an impasto effect on gessoed paper. Nice quiet little girl.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Drawing # 3 week-end series

This is drawing # 3. Don't ask me who this is. I have no idea. Used charcoal and gouache on gessoed paper. He has quite the stare. But it works.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Drawing # 2 week-end series

This started out as an adult couple inspired from a magazine clipping, but ended up looking like a pair of kids. Used charcoal to get better definition with the gouache on heavy paper.

Monday, March 21, 2011

Drawing # 1 from week-end series

Here's the first drawing / painting that I did last week-end. It is gouache paint on heavy drawing paper. Worked form a still life  of oranges, squash and sweet potatoes that were sitting on the kitchen table from Saturday morning's grocery shopping. It's been ages since I used gouache. Has a great chalky feel to it and colours mix really well together. Paintings always end up very primitive when using this medium with a palette knife instead of a brush.

More work in progress

Here's another sculpture that is in progress. I'm kinda procrastinating with this one. Not quite sure how to paint her up. She definitely needs some colour. Is she wearing a dress, a cape? I need to listen to my favourite songs and get some inspiration. Thing is not to think too much and just go with the flow. Art has a funny way of letting you know what it should be if you let it be. Otherwise, you just kill it. Yes, very yoga-inspired, I know.
